'Now' compilation series is a CD survivor

Along with a dozen other hits and four buzzworthy tracks, they'll be on the latest sonic snapshot in the thriving Now That's What I Call Music! series. Now 40 arrives Nov. 8 with such chart-scalers as Britney Spears' I Wanna Go, Rihanna's Cheers (Drink to That), Lady Gaga's You and I, Demi Lovato's Skyscraper and Jason Derulo's It Girl. The deluxe edition's bonus disc adds 16 past hits, including Pink's So What, Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl and Taylor Swift's Love Story.

Now made its U.S. debut in 1998 after racking up 40 No. 1 titles overseas. It has sold 200 million copies worldwide, including 80 million-plus here. All U.S. editions have cracked Billboard's top 10. In 2000, Now 4 entered the chart at No. 1 with 320,000 copies, the brand's first chart-topper and history's first non-soundtrack compilation to reach the summit.

Now that's a hit.

"It's our goal to release the biggest songs we can on every record," says Jeff Moskow, who as Now's head of A&R (artist and repertoire) has been assembling sets since the third disc. "Every song needs to be a hit with massive airplay. We aim for a playlist that makes sense, but we don't make judgments. We're true to what's popular. It's a mirror of the moment."

Artists leery of Now's potential to cannibalize album sales were reassured by research indicating that 70% of consumers use the samplers as incentive to buy more music, Moskow says. And the series ensures a broad reach by "using the cleanest versions of songs available so a mom or dad can listen with kids in the car."

Though sales have slipped along with all CDs in recent years, "Now has maintained a very competitive stance," Moskow says. "We release four (compilations) a year now, instead of three, to make sure every record is as exciting, vital and current as possible."

To enhance timeliness, Now streamlined its licensing and production, says Laura Rutherford, vice president of marketing and operations. And hits are anticipated with "what's next" tracks and songs yet to peak.

"A great example was Adele on (May's) Now 38," she says. Her Rolling in the Deep "was popular in England but not as much here."

A CD stalwart in a digital universe, "Now has not gone out of style." Rutherford says. "It's still relevant for all lovers of mainstream pop music."

Scotty McCreery's 'Clear as Day': A track-by-track review

In his review of Scotty McCreery's Clear as Day, USA TODAY's Jerry Shriver calls the album "strictly paint-by-numbers country" with "starter-kit material." I wouldn't be as dismissive of the album as Jerry is, but I can understand how someone coming to Clear as Day cold might have that reaction.

I'm not likely to finish listening to George Jones' He Stopped Loving Her Today or even, say, Ronnie Dunn's Cost of Livin' and think, "Boy, some Scotty McCreery music would sure sound good right now." That said, Clear as Day draws deeply from country music traditions, offering its own take on time-honored storytelling themes of God, mama and coming of age. It's an album of summer romances, Friday night football and memories of first kisses that are fresh in the mind. And that deep, honest delivery of Scotty's reflects an awareness of the genre's history that goes back farther than the singers he would've heard on the radio growing up. So I think of Clear as Day less as a starter kit and more as a solid foundation from which a young singer can grow.

Here's how the album sounds to me, track by track:

Out of Summertime. Clear as Day's sunny opener has a lively second-line beat, with a little banjo here and there. Scotty sings about a summertime romance with a girl "bright as sunshine, sweet as July" -- and that's a good way to describe this track.

I Love You This Big. Honestly, I've never been a big fan of this song. The syntax of the chorus grates on my nerves, I feel that the hook adversely emphasizes Scotty's youth, and the melody plays up some of the exaggerated qualities in his singing style that I'm hoping he'll grow out of. But have you ever heard the drums? I never even noticed them until I started listening to Clear as Day with headphones, which just goes to show you how subtly they work. But they absolutely anchor this track. Give them a close listen; you'll see what I mean.

Clear as Day. This is probably my favorite track on the album, but I'm a sucker for a surprise ending, and this is a nice twist on the contemporary, detail-rich love-song ballad. Most adults and too many teens will think of a particular person when they hear this song. For me, it's Diana Otto, the red-headed object of a summer-camp crush I never quite got over.

The Trouble With Girls. For my money, this is a much better single choice than I Love You This Big. The string arrangement strikes me as a little much -- the song's not that dramatic, not that romantic -- but, then, I'm not a teenager. And pretty much only a teenager could get away with this song: "The trouble with girls is nobody loves trouble as much as me" might sound a little creepy coming from a guy in his 30s.

Water Town Town. A small-town song with a four-on-the-floor stomp and banjo backdrop. Think Montgomery Gentry's My Town from a young perspective. There's no real plot here, just a laundry list of details about a place where "workin' hard and livin' right is the only life we know." Could be anybody's small town. Could be everybody's.

Walk in the Country. Keith Urban was smart to pitch this song from his The Ranch days to Scotty, and Scotty was smart to cut it. Like several songs on this album, it's got lots of deep, twangy guitar complementing the similar qualities in Scotty's voice. A definite highlight.

Better Than That. Backed by a bouncy, mandolin-rooted groove that just won't quit, Scotty runs down the list of all the things he thought were pretty cool until he met his new love: "First crush, first kiss ... first time I got a Chevy in my mind." The guys cooing "Your love is better than that" in the background sound kind of silly, but this is a cute song, and Scotty gets to show off his high range, something that he does more often on this album than you might expect.

Write My Number on Your Hand. A mandolin (or maybe it's a ukulele) starts strumming and is soon joined by a flirtatious fiddle melody. It's another summer-romance song, sexy and innocent at the same time, about two kids who meet each other at the local swimming hole.

Dirty Dishes. Moms will cry at the sweet, sentimental song about a suppertime prayer. With lyrics like "I want to thank you, Lord, for noisy children and slamming doors/And clothes scattered all over the floor/A husband working all the time, dragging in dead tired at night/A never-ending messy kitchen and dirty dishes," it sounds like the sort of anonymous poem that gets passed around via email. In fact, it sounds a lot like this one.

You Make That Look Good. Scotty sounds totally believable when he sings "I'm just a country boy/I drive a four-by-four/It's usually covered in mud from the axle to the floor" on this Stones-lite country-rocker. And the girl he's singing too makes him and the truck both look better just because she's with them. Songs like this are why hot models appear in music videos.

Back on the Ground. This is Scotty's I Ain't in Checotah Anymore. It's what the kid in Tom T. Hall's The Homecoming might have sung, if he'd been a nice, young boy. "Now, it's any reason to go back home," sings the 17-year-old who's trying to attend his hometown high school while launching his country music career, "that's what it's all about."

That Old King James. If Back on the Ground was Scotty's The Homecoming, this potential tearjerker is his update on Willie Nelson's hit Family Bible. It's a song that tells a family history through the pages of a tattered, leather-bound Bible. "You'll find it on every other page, yellowed lines and teardrop stains."

Highlights:Clear as Day, Walk in the Country, Dirty Dishes

Cassette tapes see new life after MP3s

Jesse Sheidlower the editor-at-large for the dictionary, said the term was considered "so past its prime that it was not worth keeping it in."

It's starting to look like that move may have been premature.

The 2.5-by-4-inch compact cassette that overtook vinyl albums and passed by eight-track tapes in the 1970s and '80s is experiencing a bit of a comeback, which some say is being fueled by the growth of indie music popularity.

A growing number of indie bands are turning to the format to get their music out more quickly and inexpensively, according to Rob Mason, the owner of Old Flame Records.

The Brooklyn-based record company released the band Total Babes' album Swimming Through Sunlight on tape before the full-length album was formally released Aug. 30 on CD and vinyl.

"From a musicmaker standpoint, I love it because they are very inexpensive to make," Mason said. "I can make 100 for not a very large investment. Especially compared to making vinyl â€" it's like a tenth of the cost."

In addition to the cost, 30-year-old Mason said the turnaround for cassettes can be as quick as two to three weeks, compared to the eight to 12 weeks needed for vinyl.

As vinyl records began their decline in the early '80s, cassettes began to saturate the music market, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.

The peak of cassette sales came in 1990, when more than 442 million cassettes were shipped. But then began the cassette's decline and the rise of the CD, which peaked in 2000 before giving way to the digital platform.

As of mid-August, music-related cassette album sales are up 46% from last year at 22,000 units sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Last year, they said, cassette album sales were at about 15,000.

"Considering not a massive amount of new releases are being pumped out there, that's substantial," said Chris Muratore, vice president for merchant services and emerging growth for Nielsen Entertainment. But, he added, the numbers are still, in the big picture, "minuscule."

Regardless of format, music consumption is at an all-time high, says David Bakula, the senior vice president of analytics entertainment for Nielsen. But even as sales of vinyl records continue to grow â€" they've increased 37% from last year, he said â€" it's uncertain whether cassette nostalgia will reach those same heights.

"The growth of vinyl continues to increase year after year," Bakula said, noting that 2.7 million vinyl albums have been sold so far this year â€" the largest vinyl sales year Nielsen SoundScan has recorded since they started tracking sales in 1991. "We don't see nearly as much of that on cassette."

Daniel Gallen, a University of Maryland student, says he began collecting cassettes this past summer when he ordered Swimming Through Sunlight on tape. Gallen, an avid vinyl collector, found himself purchasing tapes instead of vinyl because vinyl became "too expensive." Since ordering Swimming Through Sunlight, Gallen has added six cassettes to his collection, including music from the bands Woods, Parentz and Real Estate.

"It's about having something you can hold in your hands … that are kind of yours," Gallen said. "It's like getting a closer relationship to the music."

And that is exactly what Total Babes' singer/guitarist Chris Brown said the band was striving for when they released the limited-availability cassette.

"Just having that physical copy … shows more support as opposed to buying an mp3 and putting it on your iPod," Brown said. "There were only 100 copies of the tape made, so having one of those hundred gives you more of an intimate feeling for the record knowing you are one of very few people who have it."

Baltimore's Animal Collective, California-based folk rock group The Mountain Goats and Chicago prog-rockers Umphrey's McGee have also jumped on the bandwagon by releasing their music on tape for collectors and dedicated listeners, according to their websites.

"Everyone has tape players lying around … and everyone will find a way to listen to it," Brown said.

Michael Jackson goes Cirque du Soleil

The crowd: A capacity audience of 13,000 included brothers Tito, Jackie and Randy Jackson, mom Katherine and Michael's kids Prince (14), Paris (13) and Blanket (9). "We've been waiting a long time," Tito says. "It's not only emotional, it's exciting."

The tour: Sunday's show launched a 47-city North American tour that will make its U.S. debut Oct. 15 in Detroit. The tour â€" which will include a December residency at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas â€" is slated to wrap up July 20 in Chicago, though more dates are likely. The show will establish a permanent Vegas home in late 2013.

The fans: On a wet and chilly night in Montreal, Sunday's opening drew fans from Brazil to Los Angeles, some decked out with glittery white gloves and classic Thriller jackets.

The music: The show was an ecstatic barrage of hits from Jackson's solo career and Jackson 5 years. With vocal parts extracted from original studio tapes and mixed with a live band (directed by Jackson keyboardist Greg Phillinganes), it was a four-dimensional funky swirl of sound. The set ran through a host of moods â€" a night where the tender Childhood seamlessly segued into the crackling Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.

The performance: The Jamie King-directed show featured Cirque's typical attention to detail, from meticulously constructed props (glowing hearts, a handsome hot-air balloon) to exquisite cast numbers choreographed by longtime Jackson associates such as Travis Payne. Unlike traditional Cirque shows, Immortal was presented less as a nouveau circus than a fantasy concert, with some of Jackson's signature moves cast through Cirque's whimsical prism.

The centerpiece: A re-creation of Jackson's Giving Tree, the backyard spot at his Neverland Ranch where he often retreated for musical inspiration. It served as a platform for the show's high-energy, exotically costumed troupe â€" a cast of flipping, gyrating dancers as acrobatic as they were smooth.

The wow factor:Human Nature featured performers dangling over the stage, gorgeously dotted with lights against a backdrop of stars. A giant white glove and dancing shoes appeared for Beat It, and the Giving Tree expanded into a sprawling set of claws for Thriller, which featured mummies and white-tuxedoed zombies. Peace symbols adorned the chests on the robotic warriors of They Don't Care About Us, and hearts were a big theme throughout. While the show featured no singular story line, broad themes of compassion, human connection and global consciousness were sketched throughout.

The King of Pop: Jackson was a constant presence throughout, and he occasionally had the stage to himself: I'll Be There featured just his voice accompanied by a live piano, childhood footage playing on a big onstage screen.

Cassettes tapes see new life after MP3s

The crowd: A capacity audience of about 13,000 included brothers Tito, Jackie and Randy Jackson, mom Katherine and Michael's kids Prince (14), Paris (13) and Blanket (9). "We've been waiting a long time," Tito says. "It's not only emotional, it's exciting."

The tour: Sunday's show launched a 47-city North American tour that will make its U.S. debut Oct. 15 in Detroit. The tour â€" which will include a December residency at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas â€" is scheduled to wrap up July 20 in Chicago, though more dates are likely. The show will establish a permanent Vegas home in late 2013.

The fans: On a wet and chilly night in Montreal, Sunday's opening drew fans from Brazil to Los Angeles, some decked out with glittery white gloves and classic Thriller jackets. Showing up to celebrate her 50th birthday was Chicago's Lisha McDuff, a flutist. "No matter how high your expectations, (Cirque) always exceeds them," she says. "Put that with Michael Jackson, and it's got to be mind-blowing."
